R+P Post 7: Record Labels of Choice

The role of a record label is to market the music recordings and music videos for an artist. They are also in charge of the copyright for music recording and music videos as well as scouting new talent and developing artists. Record labels will also:

• Provide you with the funding to produce records
• Find a producer to develop your album
• Be in charge of the marketing campaign for the album
• Be in charge of distributing the album

When researching record labels we took into account the fact that a record label usually only signs artists from one particular genre or style of artist, and so we needed to look into record labels that would reflect our artists genre and image.

We first researched which record label artists similar to our artist were signed to and we found that Island Records signed artists such as AlunaGeorge, Disclosure and Kiko Bun.

Island Records is a label originating in Jamaica, located in London, New York and Santa Monica and is a division of the Universal Music Group. The record company exerted a major influence on the progressive UK music scene in the early 1970s which appealed to our group as our genre Electropop is an upcoming genre that is gaining popularity in the UK. An artists record label should support their image and music style as they are in charge of marketing the artist, and so Island Records will be appropriate for our artist they have experience in marketing upcoming British artists and know what is successful in the UK music market.
