R+P Post 5: The Kind of Video I Would Like to Make

As a group, we initially decided that we wanted our music video to have a lot of narrative and focus less on shooting in the studio. We decided this as during our research we discovered the Blk&Blu video which we all really enjoyed:

We really liked how the video was shot entirely on location and the hand-held camera and so we wanted to use this style for our video.

However after planning our narrative we realised that our idea would be too complex to film and that we would be able to create a more high quality music video with a simpler narrative and using the studio that we have at school to create more professional shots.

We therefore wanted to come up with ideas for interesting performance based shots that could be shot in the studio and took inspiration from videos such as Tinashe's 2 On video:

Another video that we also drew inspiration from was the Tove Lo, high all the time video:

We liked how the framing of the main girls face stayed the same while the background changed as we liked the distorted feel it gave to the video and we would like to try and include elements of this in our video.

R+P Post 4: Audience Groups of Interest

The audience group we decided to research was:
  • Age: 16-25
  • Gender: Both male and female but skewed towards females
  • Personality traits: Trendy, cool people who are aware of current trends in music, fashion etc.
We asked Flora Cox, a 17 year old girl who fits into the described target audience about her music taste and her music consumption:

From this video we can see that our target audience are fans of genres such as Drum and Bass and Synth Pop (which is our chosen genre).

R+P Post 3: Music Genres that Interest Me

Genre is going to be extremely important throughout this project as it is essential to have a clear genre throughout the music video and the marketing of our artist in order to appeal to the target audience of our genre.
I like a wide range of different music genres and listen to different genres depending on my mood or what situation I am in. As a group we all listen to similar music and so started by researching a genre that we all had in common:

UK Garage
UK Garage is electronic music that comes from the UK originating in the 1990's.

An example of a UK Garage track that I enjoy is Garage Girls- Lonyo

I enjoy old UK Garage from the early 2000's from artists such as So Solid Crew and Kyla who have a distinctive old-school look/image:

From researching UK Garage artists we came across songs such as Blk&Blu by Chase and Status which we particularly enjoyed the music video to:

As we enjoyed this song we researched what genre it came under and discovered it was Dance/Electronic. As we enjoyed the song and video we decided to research further into this genre.

Dance/ Electronic

- Wikepedia

From researching tracks under this genre we came across the artists AlunaGeorge and we were attracted to a lot of her tracks:

We enjoyed her music and therefore decided to settle on electropop/ synth as our chosen genre as it is a modern genre that we thought we could create a fun music video and marketing campaign for.

R+P Post 2: Myself as a music consumer

When?
I listen to music every day and it has become part of my daily routine. As music is my main interest I listen to a large variety of music every day. I listen to my own music on my journey to and from school and when I am doing school work. I listen to more relaxing music towards the end of the day and while I am doing work so I can focus.

Where?
I listen to music:

  • On the bus/train
  • In the car
  • In my bedroom
  • At friends houses
  • At parties and in clubs
  • At festivals and concerts
Who with?
I listen to music not only by myself but also with friends and family. However the music that I listen to by myself is different to the music I listen to with my family and different to the music I listen to with my friends.

How?
I mainly listen to music from my laptop at home or from my iPhone when I'm not at home. I also enjoy live music and going to concerts as well as listening to music in clubs to dance to. I enjoy listening to music when getting ready to go out as it puts me in a good mood.

Why?
People can associate music with memories and emotions and therefore music can be pleasurable for a consumer as it can put them in a good mood or bring back positive memories. For example a consumer could listen to music before a night out to put them in an energetic mood, or before they go to sleep to relax themselves. Music can be used as a form of escapism or can equally be social as listening to music with friends for example at a live concert can be an enjoyable experience.

Childhood

I remember listening to the song 'Smile' by Lily Allen a lot as a child as I remember my older sister and her friends playing it a lot at our house, and as I looked up to them a lot I also listened to it. It made me feel cool and grown up when I listened to it as I thought my sister and her friends were cool.

Early Teens

In my early teens I went through a faze where I enjoyed more 'indie' music such as Two Door Cinema Club. The song 'Something Good Can Work' was mine and my close friends favorite song and I have distinct memories of seeing this song live at Alexandra Palace which was an extremely fun experience.

Today:

The song 'Wile Out' by Ms Dynamite holds a lot of memories for me as I have seen her perform it live once in 2015 summer at Reading festival and twice in 2016 summer at Boom Town festival and Notting Hill Carnival. Therefore the song holds lots of memories of good times with my friends for me and always puts me in a good mood.

To conclude peoples music taste evidently changes significantly as they grow up, as people get older they are able to make more conscious decisions about the music they want to listen to rather than being influenced by friends, family and current trends. Music has many gratifications for the listener:
  • diversion
  • personal relationships
  • personal identity
but the main reason I think people listen to music is to set a particular mood for a situation. The uses and gratifications theory will be useful during this project so we can tailor our video and marketing in order to gratify the needs of the audience. Music can hold memories for people and change their mood. People also consume music in many different ways in different situations. This research will be useful for my project as it will help us tailor our artist identity, marketing and brand to suit our target audience and the ways they consume music.

R+P Post 1: My A2 Group

For this project I will be working alongside Eleanor Lynch and Ella Budgett:

I think we will all work well together as a group for this project as we have similar tastes in music and music videos and so will be able to create something we are all interested in and enjoy. We plan to meet 3/4 four times a week during our study periods in order to plan our project.

We have set up a whatsapp group chat in order to communicate with each other about meetings etc.:

We also have a group project book which each of us has taken home to do some research in and we use it to share our ideas and research during group meetings:
