R+P Post 8: Our opening sequence idea, to include sound and titles

Plot:
Our opening sequence starts with Grace checking the girl she is stalking, Ella's, social media pages and looking through photos of her. She then discovers that Ella is now dating her ex-boyfriend, and this causes her to become extremely jealous and angry.
She then recieves a Twitter notification informing her that Ella is now on the way to the gym. She then continues to get ready to go out and stalk Ella and packs her bag with gloves, a camera and a knife which she will use to hurt and attempt to kill Ella.. While getting ready she checks her mood board that she has with pictures of Ella and scribbles Ella's face out on one of the pictures.
Once she has finished getting ready she runs out the door and pushes past her brother who asks where she is going. She does not tell him where she is going and proceeds to run out of the door.

We will only use one setting for our opening sequence which is Grace's bedroom, by keeping the whole opening sequence in one setting we are creating a claustrophobic feel for the audience.

Titles:
The first source that we took inspiration for our titles from was the Art of the Title website (www.artofthetitle.com) as the website shows the titles for a large number of films that we could take inspiration from.

We took inspiration from the Dexter titles and we liked how the text was overlayed onto the clips and so planned to do this with out titles.

We also took inspiration from the Unfriended titles as the Unfriended film has the same main theme of social media as our theme, and they used titles which appeared to be typed onto the screen, and so we decided to use this style as well.
We researched many recent films such as Iron Man 3 :
to eventually come up with the wording that we want to use for our titles.

The titles that we plan to include are:
  • Directed by Prudence Carter-Phillips
  • Produced by Gabriel Meytanis
  • Starring Celine George
  • and Ella Thompson
  • Edited by Josh Oranu-Noah
  • Follow

Soundtrack:
We chose a soundtrack which creates an uneasy atmosphere, the track is called "Saw The Devil" and is composed by Alexis Smith and Joe Henson; it can be found on AudioNetwork. The track builds up and climaxes at certain points which we think will reflect the building up of emotions throughout the opening sequence.

R+P Post 7: Our film's title and plot outline

Title:
Follow

Synopsis:
Grace is an 18 year old, mixed race British girl who has an obsession with another 18 year old, mixed race British girl named Ella. She is jealous when she discovers that Ella has recently started dating Grace's ex boyfriend and becomes extremely angry. Grace therefore sets out to get revenge on Ella and as she has been stalking her she knows her daily routine and is therefore able to track where she is and go after her with the hope of killing her. After many unsuccessful attempts to kill her, Ella begins to fight back against Grace and so Grace never succeeds in killing her. However rather than Grace being caught by the police she manages to get away unpunished and moves on to her next victim in another town.

Our main reference for out plot was the movie 'Single White Female' which has the story line of the one female character being obsessed with another female characterr. We drew inspiration from the main character Hedy Carlson and her obsessive tendencies and her growing obsession which leads to violence.

R+P Post 6: Our chosen genre and how we plan to connote this

The genre we chose for our film was Psychological Thriller, with sub genres being Horror and Teen Drama.

In order to successfully connote our genre we researched psychological thrillers such as the film 'One Hour Photo' to get ideas for our opening sequence. We found that the convention was to have a memorable and unique main character who was evidently weird and gives the audience a sense of unease. Our main character 'Grace' is evidently not normal through her obsessive habits of checking her phone and meticulously planning her route, and this connotes that there is something not as it should be in the story line. This is the same as the character Sy in one hour photo who also has obsessive tendencies.

We also plan to connote the Psychological thriller genre in our opening through out use of Mese-en-scene. We also used One Hour Photos as inspiration for our props and we liked the idea of the stalker character having a mood board covered in photos of the person they are stalking which is used in One Hour Photo as seen below:

R+P Post 5: How we plan to attract/address our target audience

We plan to attract our core target audience on fans of Psychological thrillers by making the genre extremely clear in the opening sequence. We are using lots of tightly framed shots of the main character to create a feeling of claustrophobia. We will also connote the Psychological thriller through our prop choices, for example we plan to include and knife and a mood board of the girl we are stalking.

We plan to attract the teenage target audience by including social media and technology as a main theme in our opening sequence. This will attract this audience as they are the main consumers of social media and spend a lot of time on their smart phones and on the internet.

R+P Post 4: Representation of social groups in our opening sequence

In our opening sequence the main social group we are representing is middle class, British teenage girls through our main character who is 18 years old, mixed race, British and female.

In order to represent the teenage age group of 13-18 year olds we are including a main theme of social media and technology in our opening sequence. Teenagers typically are interested in social media and spend a lot of time on their smart phones, therefore out main character, Grace, will obsessively check her phone and social media pages throughout the opening sequence.

We are representing British teenagers through the British accents of Grace and her brother. We didn't want to include any negative gender representations and so we decided to make the stalker character female and the character who is being stalked female. We also didn't want to include any negative racial stereotypes and so we would include characters of all races.

R+P Post 3: Our Production and distribution institutions

Production Institution

Production Company: Bugle Films
Nationality: British
Location: London, England
Style of Institution: Independent

Distribution Company: Film 4
Nationality: British

We chose the Distribution company Film 4 as our movie will be an independent British movie. We researched similar films such as The Inbetweeners (2) and found that they were distributed by Film 4 which led us to chose film 4.

We chose to create our own production company in order to have a company which was specifically designed to produce films similar to our. Our production company specialises is the Horror and Thriller genre while also being an independent British company.
Nationality: British
Location: London, England
Style of Institution: Independent

R+P Post 2: Our Target Audience

Our Primary Audience:

  • Fans of Psychological thrillers
  • Boys and Girls aged 15-24
Our main reference when choosing out target audience was the film 'Stalked at 17' as it has similar themes to, represents the same age group, and has the same genre as the film we are planning.

Another prominent theme that our film has is the use of social media and therefore we also looked at the films 'Catfish' and 'Unfriended' which are thriller/horror movies based around the theme of Social Media. Researching these films is what encouraged us to bring our target audience age slightly lower (15-17 year olds) as social media is something that attracts them.

 Our Secondary Audience
  • Fans of Horror films
  • 24+
We chose our secondary target audience based on the typical target audience for Horror films as our film will have elements of the horror genre. Horror films tend to attract an older target audience as they enjoy the thrill that comes with horror films.
